Online Trustee training

Hempsons’ annual trustee training will be held this year online. They will be joined by haysmacintyre, charity accountants, who have supported the trustee training for a number of years.

Hempsons will be sharing experiences of some of the lessons that charities have learnt through the pandemic in relation to governance. These include an acceleration in decision-making and implementation. Organisational speed of response has been enabled by streamlined, focused delegation and greater Board entrustment of staff and volunteers. Other efficiencies can include proportionate reporting to the Board on the core areas they need to measure.

The programme has been split into three separate sessions, which can be attended as a full programme, or individually, the sessions are interlinked and build on each other.

It has been designed for charity trustees and Chief Executives, and is suitable for those new in post as well as the more experienced who are wanting a refresher.

The aim is to give practical tips to help improve your governance and those who attend will be sent an update on recent legal developments for the charity sector.

The programme will cover:

• Session One – 23 September – Legal duties and responsibilities of charity trustees 
  The legal duties and responsibilities of charity trustees, including managing conflicts of interest. Exploring the need for trustees to take responsibility for their organisations and how boards have been responding to the challenges of the pandemic.
• Session Two – 28 September – Improving governance at Board and Senior Management level
  Making governance work better at Board and Senior Management level, looking at Board effectiveness and its role, how this relates to the work of the Chief Executive, efficient delegation and how to approach taking the difficult decisions.
• Session Three – 5 October – Trustees’ responsibilities for financial governance
  Trustees’ responsibilities for both external and internal financial reporting, examining key areas such as the different types of funds and how they can be spent and the linking of reserves policy to strategy.

The sessions will be presented by Ian Hempseed, Head of Charities and Social Enterprise; Helen Hirst, Associate Charities and Social Enterprise both of Hempsons and Richard Weaver, Head of Charities and Not for Profit at haysmacintyre (specialist charity accountants).
