‘Playing Out In Hull’ allows children to play freely and safely in their own street by using temporary road closures. Working with the Highways Department an order can be granted allowing a temporary play street order, closing the street for a short period of time for communities to come together to play out and have lots of fun!
The street is manned by volunteer marshals who live on the street, safely allowing vehicles to slowly enter and exit the street, making sure people can still gain vehicle access during the sessions.
The sessions normally last for one to three hours and can be as regular as suits the street – weekly or monthly for example.
Before a closure can be granted, the whole street must be consulted with and any concerns are carefully considered
The National Playing out website is really useful and is full of examples of successful schemes around the country – https://playingout.net/
The Neighbourhood Network is a big supporter of the Playing Out scheme and currently is part of the steering group to keep supporting this movement in and around Hull. It falls within the charities aims and objective encouraging strong communities.
