Message from Chief Constable Lee Freeman

Humberside Police Chief Constable Lee Freeman has provided the following update in relation to three weeks of policing Covid-19 restrictions.

CC Freeman said: “Further to the update I provided yesterday, in relation to the eight tickets issued over the bank holiday weekend, I wish to provide an update in relation to our policing approach throughout the last three weeks of living under the new restrictions.

“When we started three weeks ago, I was clear that enforcement would only be used after all reasonable requests and other options had been tried.

“Over this time, we have worked across Hull, East Riding and Northern Lincolnshire, supporting around 1 million residents to do the right thing.

“As of this morning, Wednedsay 15 April, Humberside Police have issued a total of 21 fixed penalty notices under the new legislation relating to Covid 19.

“In addition, we have also arrested a further seven people in incidents directly related to the current restrictions.

“I am confident that our policing style and approach remains the right one for the communities we serve, and crucially, remains consistent with the approach expected by the Government.

“Over the coming weeks, I want to reassure our local communities that we will continue with this common sense approach and use enforcement as a tactical option where our officers and staff cannot secure cooperation.

“I wish to record my personal thanks to everyone for the support that our staff have continued to see, feel and receive and I wish to reassure everyone that the day to day policing that we have maintained, will continue.”
