Humberside Police update:
This year to date, we have had a total of 12 fatal collisions on the roads in our region. Of these, half were directly linked to the excessive use of speed.
Chief Superintendent Christine Wilson said: “Each of those deaths has meant devastation and loss for local families.
“In our view, even one fatal collision is one too many, which is why we are absolutely committed to doing everything we can to reduce the number of families having to go through this heartbreak.
“As part of this, we recently took park in the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s speed campaign, an intensified week of action against those found speeding in our area.
“During the week, we worked closely with colleagues at Safer Roads Humber, with over 3500 speeders stopped between us on roads across our area.
“This resulted in fines, court appearances and educational courses for those caught and I hope that it makes them think twice about speeding in the future.
“We make no apologies for our enforcement patrols and for the approach we will take in dealing with those who pose a risk on the roads to others.
“If you decide to ignore the speed limits and drive dangerously, don’t be surprised when we pull you over or if you get a ticket through the post.
“We will do everything we can to keep our roads safe, but everyone reading this has a vital part to play in keeping themselves and others safe too.
“We don’t want to have to give any more news that rips families apart.”
Share the road and consider all road users. Drive to the conditions and always remember that the ‘Fatal Four’ (drink driving, inappropriate speed, distracted driving – such as using a mobile phone and not wearing a seatbelt) are all things we know cause deaths on our roads. Please help us keep our roads safe.
