Context and Purpose of the Job
The Refugee Council works in the UK with asylum seekers and refugees. Our operational teams based in various locations in England provide advice and assistance across a wide range of issues, including helping asylum seekers through the complexities of the asylum system, addressing issues of destitution and assisting refugees and asylum seekers to access key services including housing, welfare benefits, health, education and employment.
We operate four main teams, Resettlement, Therapeutic, Integration and Unaccompanied Children’s teams. Our teams work with relevant agencies including the Home Office, Refugee Community Organisations, Local Authorities, Legal Service Providers, Housing Providers, Health Institutions, Job Centre Plus and other mainstream service providers.
The Social Integration Assistant is a newly created post within the Integration Services team at the Refugee Council. The Integration Services team works with newly recognised refugees during the often difficult process of transitioning from asylum support to mainstream services. It focuses its support in helping individuals and families struggling to rebuild their lives in a new and unfamiliar country.
The team’s Integration Advisers work with those who have just been granted status and seeks to address urgent issues relating to housing, welfare and health. Our Employment Advisers are there to help people who have been here slightly longer and are at the stage where they are ready to take the next steps towards employment and financial independence. The Social Integration Assistant will provide a link between these two support elements. The postholder will work with the broader team. The delivery of a Conversation Club will be central to the initial engagement with topics for further activities, workshops and events decided by the group depending on their identified needs.
