10th February 2022Humberside Fire: Environmental Sustainability Plan 2021 – 2024

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is passionate about ensuring the role they play, not only protecting the public but enhancing the environment and encouraging sustainability.
As the effects of climate change become more evident, HFRS continue to adapt their approach to daily activities, as well as operational response, to cope with the added pressures this puts on the Service.
The service have launched a consultation on their Environmental Sustainability Plan 2021 – 2024 and are seeking feedback on the areas that are being considered, helping to reach the goal of being carbon neutral by 2036. This Plan gives an overview of the various areas of work needed to achieve a sustainable environment for many years to come. It also builds on areas the Service has already implemented, such as two years ago they switched from providing plastic bottled water on fire engines and firefighting training to providing our staff with a refillable water bottle. To date we have avoided buying 50,000 bottles, about 500kg of plastic which could either end in landfill or recycling processes.
Other areas of improved sustainability are:
- Installing energy saving lighting and motion sensor lighting in their buildings.
- Moving away from single portions of tea and coffee supplies, including milk from the meeting room facilities.
- Switching to a 100% renewable electricity provider.
- Investing in vehicles, including 3 electric vans to replace diesel vans which travel across the region.
- Reducing non-emergency service vehicles by 20% after looking at their usage.
This consultation closes on Friday 18 February 2022 at 12 noon.
