Community Policing Teams and Community Safety Volunteers will be available to chat to at the University’s Welcome Fest. They will be giving out advice and answering any concerns students may have regarding their own safety and the security of their valuables.

There will have a drop-in desk where anyone can come and visit. It’s all part of the annual campaign to educate students and keep them safe while at University.

As well as giving out important advice about the seriousness of personal safety, mascots Billy the Burglar and Bob the Dog will be around campus to highlight the importance of bicycle security and let students know about the free UK Property Register scheme www.immobilise.com.

They will be at the University of Hull’s Student Union (HUU) building from Sunday 17 until today, Tuesday 19 September.

PC Carl Palmer, the University’s Community Beat Manager, said: “We are looking forward to meeting students and letting them know we’re here to help, to offer any advice they may need, and reassure them we will be very visible on the streets in highly populated student areas.

“We want students to feel safe, but also to think and act for themselves. The next few weeks are very busy for everyone at University. Our messages are about personal safety, protection of property and raising awareness of safety issues.

“We’re looking forward to meeting as many students as we can.”
