Reducing Fire Risks at Home

Humberside Fire and Rescue have recently attended a few fires involving everyday items left too close to heat sources in the home, so are sharing some important fire safety advice to help reduce the risk and keep everyone safe.

One of the main risks is plastic items near heat sources. Plastic can melt and catch fire easily, allowing a fire to spread quickly. Candles are also a common cause of fires, especially when left unattended or placed near flammable materials such as curtains.

To reduce the risk of fire:

• Keep items that can catch fire, especially plastics, well away from cookers, heaters, fireplaces, lit candles and other heat sources.
• Keep cooking areas clean and tidy. A build-up of fat and grease can easily catch fire.
• Do not leave pans unattended. If you need to leave the room, remove them from the heat.
• Never leave candles unattended. Always place them on a stable, heat-resistant surface and keep them away from anything that could burn.
• Consider using safer alternatives to candles, such as battery-operated options. 
• Remember to recycle batteries at collection points in shops or local recycling centres rather than putting them in the bin.

It’s also important to have an early warning in the event of a fire:

• Make sure you have a working smoke alarm on every level of your home.
• Test your smoke alarms regularly to make sure they sound and will alert you.

Taking these steps can help reduce the risk of fire and give you more time to act if one does occur.
