Criminals are taking advantage of households damaged by the recent energy price cap increase by claiming to be energy companies.
These scams are appearing to be in the form of phishing emails and claim to be from high-end, well-known firms such as Eon, EDF Energy or British Gas.
They claim to offer additional financial support and refunds, including grants that are greater than the £400 granted by the government.
When they have possession of your details, criminals can commit various types of fraud against victims, such as by impersonating them to commit identity theft or using stolen details to gain access to online accounts.
Some pre-payment customers have been offered discounted energy prices by the scammers, who dishonestly claim to be able to top up meters for a cheaper fee.
However, energy companies can detect when they have not received correct payment for the energy used and will charge the individual for this, meaning victims of energy fraud will be paying more for their energy.
