Gift Card Fraud
Fraud Watch have been informed by Humberside Police that fraudsters are contacting people through Facebook via a profile, either as a cloned “known friend” or an “Agent”. An ‘Agent’ (scammer) will message and explain you have won a large sum of money.
The victim will be asked to send over a smaller amount of money usually via APPLE GIFT CARDS to the ‘Agent’ and once received the promise of the Cash Prize Money.
The Cash Prize will never arrive and the fraudsters will continue to request more money or gift cards to help release the large Cash Prize Money.
Scammers can clone social media accounts portraying to be friends / family members /corporate agents. Contact you on WhatsApp using a “Spoofing ” technique, which shows the telephone number calling you to be within the UK or a local number.
Take your time to consider what is being asked by you and if you have any concerns always hang up, ensure the other person has cleared, or use a different phone to call 101 or 999.
If you have been a victim and lost money, call 101 and report it.
