Happy New Year from Humberside Police

2018 has got off to a busy start, with the vast majority of you enjoying a safe and happy New Year’s Eve.

However, there were a small minority of people – most of which had been drinking – who got involved in violent or disorderly incidents where the police had to step in.

The festivities started steadily, with 289 calls made to us between 6pm and midnight.

Between midnight and 7.30am we received a total of 489 calls to 999 and 101 – most of which were made after 2am.

Superintendent Dave Hall, said: “We’d like to wish everyone who lives and works in our area a very happy New Year.

“Like all forces, New Year’s Eve is one of our busiest nights of the year and we had plans in place to deal with that.

“We had extra patrols out across the area to help act as a deterrent and to quickly deal with any problems that arose.

“I would like to thank all our officers, staff and volunteers who gave up their New Year’s Eve with their friends and family to help you and your loved ones enjoy seeing in 2018 safely.

“We’d also like to thank our colleagues with the other emergency services, licensees and bar staff for their help in making it a night to remember for all the right reasons.”

Over the course of night we made 36 arrests –including five people said to be drunk and disorderly, 18 suspected of being involved in violent offences or affray and six suspected of drink driving

And today we’re urging you to make sure you don’t end up spending the first day of the New Year with us by getting behind the wheel too early.

Supt Hall added: “If you were out celebrating last night, or you had a few drinks at home to see in the New Year, please make sure you’re under the limit before you head out in the car or on your bike today.

“You might feel okay, but that doesn’t mean all the alcohol’s out of your system yet – and no amount of sleep, coffee or hangover cure can speed that up – so give yourself time to fully recover .

“We’re also still very busy this morning, so thank you for your patience and understanding.”
