1st July 2021Hull: Adverse Childhood Experiences Event

We all walk around carrying our own trauma, and unbeknown to us, pass onto the next generation. What if we could do something about it?
A free 2 day event will be taking place on 9th & 10th July to highlight the issue and what we can do to stop the cycle. Check out below the detailed activities from the organisers:

On Friday 9th July there will be a chance for Hull and East Yorkshire residents to view the film “Resilience – the Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope” for free, followed by a panel discussion.

On Saturday 10th July we plan to start by launching the film that is being made especially for this event. Local people with lived experiences tell their stories of what it was like to grow up with ACEs and describe the impact it had on their lives. They talk about how they got through, and the amazing people that made a real difference for them by just loving them. This is a collaboration between local artists from Ground on Beverley Road, a local filmmaker and other Hull artists.
We will then discuss the history of ACEs in Hull – how our history as a city may have impacted the trauma suffered by residents over the years, how it manifests now and what we could be doing to interrupt the intergenerational cycle of trauma being passed on through communities and families. How learning about ACEs has the power to remove shame and inspire compassion for others.
We will then have a break and move on to the hope and the healing – what can we do?
This will involve a discussion about schools, and a discussion about hope and healing in the community. There will also be an option for just chatting and networking in the “Green Room” which will have a host.
After lunch there will be a range of workshops that people can opt in to all on a “healing” theme. These will be quite short and hopefully people can try more than one. Workshops will repeat.
At the end of the day, we will have a celebration including someone representing the movement in Scotland – what we can learn from their journey and where we could go next.
We will have another chance to see the film.
In the evening (once children are in bed) there will be the first meeting of the “Parents/carers campfire” which will be a support group for those who have adopted or fostered children in Hull and surrounding areas hosted by an adoptive parent.
We hope that this event will be a “seed bomb” of inspiration to take action by those who attend. That they will feel what I felt when I first understood about ACEs “Why doesn’t everyone know about this?” and spread the message. There will be a follow up screening (in person) of the Resilience film in September, so attendees can bring those they want to share the message with.
