Hull: Man charged with 27 counts of criminal damage

On Monday 1 November, a 28-year-old man was arrested and has since been charged with multiple counts of criminal damage across the city of Hull.

Jamie Mullenger of Hull admitted causing 27 counts of criminal damage by spraying the graffiti tag WEL and WELDER on Newland Avenue and other locations in Hull.

Neighbourhood officer PC Mellors said: “Graffiti is criminal damage if you do not have the owner’s permission.

“Graffiti is a top priority for the Neighbourhood team on the Beverley/Newland Ward and I have been working with the Newland Avenue Resident Association and Hull City Council’s CCTV unit in tackling this problem on Newland Avenue.

“The resident association works hard in the area to ensure it looks respectable, and immediately paints over the graffiti tags because they are an eyesore.

“The resident association is proud of its community and feels graffiti tags bring down the area. Graffiti can also contribute to increased perceptions of anti-social behaviour, crime and have cost implications for the owners of private property.

“I hope that the charging of this man acts as a warning to anyone who thinks it’s acceptable.

“I would encourage members of the public to report graffiti to us and to the local council so we can continue to take action against offenders.”
