13th December 2022Hull: Jail for ‘reckless’ driver after city centre pursuit
14th December 2022Nearly 50 uninsured vehicles seized
Message from Humberside Police:
Nearly 50 vehicles were seized during a week-long operation to tackle uninsured drivers on our region’s roads.
As part of the national campaign, officers from our Roads Policing Unit issued 50 traffic offence reports and seized 47 vehicles in the week from Monday 21 November to Sunday 26 November.
Sgt Diane Kemp from our Roads Policing Unit said: “Driving without insurance can have devastating consequences and the law is clear on this: all motor vehicles being used on a public highway must meet the minimum insurance requirements.
“Each year, more than 130 people are killed on our country’s roads by uninsured drivers. It is the taxpayers who have to pay for uninsured incidents, and it costs each of us £53 per year.
“I’m pleased with the results we achieved in Humberside during the week. That is 47 uninsured vehicles off our roads and this will help to make our roads safer. Last year, half of the vehicles seized nationally were driven by people with criminal records. People driving without insurance are ten times more likely to be convicted drink drivers.
“The campaign was partly about enforcement, of course, but we also wanted to educate motorists in our region.
“It is the driver’s responsibility to make sure they are insured, and this includes those driving company vehicles. If you are caught without insurance, you will face a minimum fine of £300 and you will get at least six points on your licence.
“As has been seen, we will also seize vehicles where appropriate.
“My advice to motorists is to check you are insured. You can do that through your insurer, the gov.uk website or the Motor Insurers Bureau website at www.mib.org.uk
“If your insurance company has the facility, you can ask to enrol into their auto-renewal scheme to make sure you are always covered.”
