As the festive season has recently been it also creates the perfect chance for opportunist thieves to strike. Shockingly, over one-third of burglaries occur because of unlocked doors or windows, and Humberside Police are urging people to take proactive measures to safeguard their homes and valuables during this vulnerable time.
Detective Superintendent Simon Vickers said: “We are committed to bringing offenders to justice, but we also urge residents to take simple, effective steps to secure their homes and belongings.
“Prevention is key to avoiding the distress and impact caused by burglary.”
Help to keep your property safe by following some of the basic prevention advice below.
Household security:
· Lock doors and windows, even when at home. Unlocked windows, even on upper floors, can be easy targets for thieves.
· Keep keys out of sight and away from doors. For keyless vehicles, store fobs in faraday bags or boxes.
· Use light timers or leave a light on with energy-efficient bulbs to give the impression someone is home.
· Invest in additional security measures like patio door locks, CCTV, or burglar alarms.
· Keep valuables and gifts out of sight, including those under the Christmas tree.
· Avoid advertising travel plans or new purchases on social media, which can tip-off criminals.
If you’re going away:
· Before heading out, ensure your home appears occupied to deter burglars.
· Work with trusted neighbours or join a Neighbourhood Watch group to keep an eye on your property. For details visit here.
· Use automatic timers for lights and ask a trusted neighbour to collect post or adjust curtains.
· Secure outbuildings and remove tools or ladders that could aid break ins.
Cycle Safety
Bicycles remain a popular Christmas gift and are often targeted by thieves. So, if you or someone you know will be riding home for Christmas this festive season, take effective measures to keep them safe and secure by:
· Registering it on Bike Register or Immobilise for free.
· Locking it securely, whether at home or in public spaces. Consider using a garage alarm.
· Avoid posting images or location details of your bike online to reduce the risk of being targeted.
· Remove cycle carriers from your car when they’re not in use.

· Avoid tidying up to preserve evidence for the investigation.

· Cancel any stolen bank cards or report lost documents like passports to the relevant authorities.
Authorities encourage everyone to stay vigilant. If you see suspicious activity, report it via 999 for emergencies, 101 for non-emergencies, or anonymously though Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
