Did you catch our firefighters recently on BBC Look North during their water rescue training?
With more sunny weather on the way, we’re sharing this life-saving information to help you stay safe. Even on a warm, sunny day, the water can remain dangerously cold and cold-water shock can have fatal consequences.
Water safety tips:
✅ Follow warning and safety signs
✅ Let someone know where you’re going if heading out alone
✅ Watch out for slip or trip hazards near water
✅ Stay clear of unstable riverbanks and cliff edges
If someone falls into deep water:
📞 Call 999 immediately for emergency help
📍 Use the What3Words app to share your exact location
Remember: Float to Live
If you find yourself in trouble in the water:
🔹 Tilt your head back, keeping ears submerged
🔹 Relax and breathe normally
🔹 Spread arms and legs to stay afloat
🔹 Once calm, call for help or swim to safety
Tragically, lives have been lost in our local waterways. As warmer weather draws more people towards the water, let’s stay informed and stay safe.
