Last Friday in a 24 hour period, seven front-line officers have been assaulted in the course of their duties in five separate incidents across the Humberside force area.
Chief Constable Lee Freeman said, “Thankfully, the three Police Officers, three PCSOs and Special Constable have not suffered any serious injuries, however I am incredibly dismayed that during these worrying and unprecedented times, a number of them have had people deliberately cough into their faces, which is extremely concerning for the officers and their families. It is totally unacceptable that they have had to endure any type of injury while only doing their job.
“Attacks like these should not happen and I want to make clear that any assault on an emergency worker is wholly unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
“Our officers and staff come to work to protect people and to keep them safe, and this will always be our priority.
“We will absolutely not accept the actions of anyone who thinks they can get away with assaulting an emergency worker, and we will always look to take action and seek prosecution for those individuals that commit such offences.”
Three people have been charged with five assaults, a man remains in custody. A further suspect fled the scene of an incident and has not yet been located.
