15th October 2024Welcome House in East Riding
Did you know Welcome House is now also in East Riding? Every Thursday from 10am to 1pm, support workers Sireen and Zahara are available to asylum seekers and refugees at the Armstrong Centre in Beverley. The same services are available as at Welcome House in Hull: English classes, socialising, a wellbeing session once a month and monthly visits from MIND and a children’s centre.
They are there for people from Goole, Bridlington, Driffield, Leconfield, Hessle and all East Riding. As well as help with administrative tasks, they organise trips, parties and museum visits.
Sireen saw the job advertised on Facebook and felt it would fit in with her existing work with the Refugee Council. As someone of Palestinian birth she understands how it must feel to be a refugee, having come to the UK on a spouse visa with her husband and daughter, and she knows how hard it is to integrate. She says, “People need someone to help them. I was lucky because I had friends and family, but it was still difficult.”
Sireen studied Sociology and Anthropology and has a master’s in Democracy and Human Rights.
“It doesn’t matter what country, what colour, or what language people speak,” she says. “We are all human beings. Sometimes people just need a hug.”
