19th November 2025Energy Supplier Scam Alerts

Scammers are always finding new ways to trick us, we have been made aware of a number of scams currently circulating within the energy industry. Some individuals are posing as legitimate energy suppliers and contacting businesses through emails, text messages, or even physical letters claiming that payment is overdue and requesting immediate action.
These messages may look convincing, often including official-looking logos, reference numbers, and contact details. However, they are fraudulent and designed to obtain your personal or financial information.
What to do if you receive a suspicious message:
1. Don’t reply or click any links
- Don’t open attachments, click links, or call any numbers in the message.
- Don’t provide any personal details (account number, date of birth, bank info, etc.).
2. Check if it’s genuine
- Visit the energy company’s official website manually (not through the message) and look for:
- Their verified contact details
- Any scam warnings they may have posted
- If you’re a customer, log in to your online account to see if there are any alerts or issues.
3. Verify using trusted contact methods
- Call the company using the number on your bill, their website, or a previous genuine letter/email.
- Ask them to confirm whether they contacted you.
4. Report the scam
You can report it to:
- Action Fraud (UK): the national reporting centre
- Your energy company (many have dedicated fraud teams)
- Ofgem (for awareness, though they don’t investigate individual cases)
- Your mobile provider:
- Forward scam texts to 7726 (free)
- Report suspicious emails to report@phishing.gov.uk
5. Block and delete the message
- Block the number/sender so they can’t contact you again.
- Delete the message once reported.
6. Stay alert for further scams
If you’ve interacted with the message, keep an eye on:
- Bank activity
- Unusual calls or emails
- New credit applications (you can check via credit reference agencies)
We want to ensure your account remains secure and that you have confidence in your communications. If you’re ever unsure, it’s always best to double-check before taking any action.
