Man jailed for violent screwdriver attack

A 47-year-old man has been locked up for seven and a half years after an assault he committed with a screwdriver where the victim suffered a fractured eye socket and lost a tooth.

Paul Tansey, of Hampshire Street, Hull, was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after an incident in January this year.

At around 12pm on Monday, 23 January, the victim was approached by a man unknown to him on Beverley Road in Hull.  

The two men sat talking for a while, and the victim disclosed he was currently homeless. Before the man left, he offered for him to come and stay at his home and left his address on a piece of paper.

Later that day, the victim attended the address, and another man, later to be identified as Tansey, was also present.

At around 10pm, all three went to a nearby shop, where they met up with a woman who also came back to the house with them.

A misunderstanding between the group ensued, which led to Tansey launching from one side of the room and attacking the victim with a screwdriver. He sustained a fractured eye socket, lost a tooth, and suffered extensive bruising and cuts to his head, chest, and hand.

Tansey pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced at Hull Crown Court on Friday 12 May, to seven and a half years in prison.

Detective Constable Lauren Ireland from our Criminal Investigation Department said: “The victim is very lucky to be alive and not to have lost an eye following such a violent attack, but the impact of the incident has understandably left him with lasting mental and physical trauma.

“I do hope that with Tansey now in prison, it gives the victim some comfort in knowing he cannot put anyone else in fear of their lives, and I hope he feels a sense of justice has been achieved.

“Violence will not be tolerated within our communities, and we are committed to investigating and holding those to account for any form of violent behaviour or actions.”
