14th November 2024Meet the team with ‘a particular set of skills’ – Humberside Police
15th November 2024Who are the Digital Detectives?
Challenged with solving some of the most complex of crimes, Humberside Police‘s major crime team have a specialist team of digital detectives trained to assist in exploring all digital avenues of investigation to help keep our communities safe.
Dealing with investigations including murder and sudden death, digital media investigators (DMIs) are always on hand to assist the Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) and co-ordinate the vast array of digital lines of enquiry to help catch a criminal.
From CCTV trawls to the myriad of footage posted on social media channels, as well as any information that may be held on any devices seized, their digital media investigators leave no stone unturned.
Scouring for vital clues to help trace victims, suspects, evidence and even understand the circumstances surrounding an incident, their digital media investigators search through often thousands of hours’ worth of footage including CCTV, doorbell, social media, and phone data.
As the investigation develops, our four dedicated specialist digital media investigators start to piece together all the vital clues and evidence, building a timeline of digital events to bolster the investigation strategy.
Teaming up with the wider investigation team to understand how the case is developing, whether that be a suspect that’s been identified, arrested, or interviewed, forensic evidence, or information from members of the public, the team are always on the lookout for more information to build a true picture of the circumstances around the case.
Throughout the course of their enquiries, the team will head out to hunt the streets to identify and uncover any other possible digital opportunities to help piece together and unearth exactly what happened.
With an ever-growing modernisation of technology and the use of easily accessible home security systems the public are always a great help in assisting with a vital part of a jigsaw they may not even know they have. That is why, when they appeal for information, no matter how small you think it might be, it could play a significant part in solving a terrible crime.
