Public honoured at police bravery awards

Three members of the public have been honoured by the police in recognition of their bravery at the annual National Police Chiefs’ Council Police Public Bravery Awards 2017.

Ebrima Touray and Taha Mohammed were both honoured for subduing and disarming a man who was brandishing a knife and a saw and threatening to kill another man at a mosque in Hull in September 2016.

Both men overpowered the attacker on Albany Street. He was later charged with kidnap, threats to kill, making threats with an offensive weapon, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Ebrima Touray was awarded the Gold Medal for his bravery after struggling physically with the armed man and managing to veer him away from innocent bystanders before officers arrested him.

Taha Mohammed was awarded the Silver Medal for grabbing the weapons from the attacker, preventing him from entering the mosque, and communicating with him in Arabic to try and calm him down.

Megan Clements was awarded with a Silver Medal for her part in stopping a violent attacker who was badly beating up another man at the White Horse pub in Howden.

A crowd was watching the assault take place, but Megan was the only person to intervene. She put her own safety at risk by twice pulling the attacker away from the other man who was being severely kicked about his head and body.

The attacker eventually pleaded guilty to section 18 wounding and received three years in prison for the assault.
