International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women – Hull campaign

Tomorrow, 25^th November is White Ribbon Day – ‘International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women’.

Over the next 16 days in Hull, nationally and across the globe, agencies will be working together to raise awareness of the White Ribbon campaign, which is the world’s largest effort of men working to end violence against women and girls.

The White Ribbon campaign recognises that men can be victims of domestic abuse. This campaign, however, is focused on male violence towards women as this is the predominant picture nationally and locally in Hull, with more than 81% of victims being women.  Hull City Council also employs a dedicated men’s worker who supports male victims of domestic abuse and any activity to raise awareness of domestic abuse will increase awareness and practice for all victims.

In our city alone, there are estimated to be 24,690 women and 18,468 children each year who are subjected to domestic abuse. Nationally, this figure is estimated at 1.2 million and these are figures which I’m sure you will agree are not acceptable and cannot be tolerated.

As a city, we need to join together to raise awareness so that we can eliminate this problem from our communities and make Hull a safer place to live and work.

We urge you all to get behind this campaign to raise awareness by signing the White Ribbon pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence towards women and girls.

In Hull, there are a number of activities arranged over the 16 day period and some of you will already be involved, as many staff from across the Council and our partner agencies have been helping to organise events.

Anyone can sign the pledge and we have set a target to get 24,690 signatures to mark the number of women impacted in our city.
