Could your school become a Barmston Drain guardian?

Have you ever wondered what Barmston Drain is for, how it’s looked after and the important part it plays in helping to prevent flooding and manage the flow of water locally?

Well, Hull & East Riding Living with Water would like to offer students at schools near Barmston Drain the opportunity to find out just that, as well as all about the broader subject of water and protecting the environment.

As part of the Living with Water partnership, Yorkshire Water has developed a session aimed at Key Stage 2 students, linked to the topic of water. They’re delighted to be able to offer it to your school and would love you to get involved.

The session will be split into two halves…

Afternoon session

Education Advisers at Yorkshire Water would come to your school, or reach out to you virtually, to deliver a 45-minute interactive session in the morning. Your students will be given an insight into:-

• The water cycle and how we deliver water to your taps and what happens after you flush.
• How the blockage of pipes can occur and how to prevent it.
• Disposing of rubbish, including plastic, safely.
• The protection of our environment, linking to Barmston Drain.
• How we can all ‘live with water’, touching upon the risk of flooding.

Morning session

In the afternoon, the second half of the session will be delivered outdoors by partner, Groundwork, and will include a site visit to Barmston Drain.

Here, Groundwork will run fun and interactive workshops with your students, helping to develop their understanding of Barmston Drain, the correct disposal of waste and educate them around the need to reduce blockages in our drains. It will also include a litter pick and discussions.
