HULL SPIRIT 2: TRAILBLAZERS
Following the success of Hull Spirit: Iconic People & Places last year, we’re doing another exhibition at the Minster this September (10th – 29th, to be exact). Like last year, it will have a Hull theme; this time, it’s ‘trailblazers’.
We’re using a fairly broad definition of ‘trailblazer’. It can of course be a person who was the first to do something in their field, e.g. Clive Sullivan being the first black Briton to captain any national sports team. However, it could also be an institution, e.g. The Deep being the first submarium, or even more broadly, an area in which Hull led the way, e.g. the first place to use police dogs, or LCD technology being invented at the University of Hull. They don’t have to be well-known trailblazers either – in fact, this is probably a good opportunity to showcase some of Hull’s ‘unsung heroes’. If you’re stuck for ideas, we have produced a handy list of suggestions – just drop us us a line at wemadethishull@gmail.com if you’d like a copy.
Representation and size of make
As ever, how you represent your chosen trailblazer is entirely up to you. However, due to the limited size of the exhibition space at the Minster, and to try and accommodate as many makes as possible, the same size restrictions as last year apply.
For 3D makes: max. 50cm x 50xm (D x W). No height restrictions – it just has to be stable. There is some give in this for larger groups working on one make.
For 2D makes: max. 1m wide, preferably smaller – there is limited hanging space at the Minster, so we won’t be able to fit in many large-scale works.
How to take part I
If you’d like to take part, please leave a comment on our website or send us an email at wemadethishull @gmail.com with your chosen trailblazer. Alternatively, join the Craft Project Hull FB group and leave a comment on the announcement at the top. We will be keeping track of who the makes pledge, and will regularly update the list at the bottom of the post on FB and our website. Please check the list to see if your idea is already on it – like last year, we’re trying to avoid duplication as much as possible.
We’ll be sending all those who’ve a pledged a make a form at the beginning of August, to capture the exact specifications of your contributions, some contact details, and your availability for dropping off and collecting your make, both for the practice set-up and the actual setting up and taking down of the exhibition.
Deadline for return of this form is Monday 19th August. This is also the deadline for the submission of pledges. Please note that if you do not return the form by this deadline, we’ll assume that you won’t be submitting your make for the exhibition, and it will therefore not appear in the exhibition booklet that we’re producing.
The exhibition: practice set-up and actual set-up / take-down
The exhibition will take place from Tuesday 10th September until Sunday 29th September. We will set up the exhibition on Monday 9th September, and will take it down again on Monday 30th. (We may well ask you to help out with this – look out for announcements nearer the time).
We will also be doing a practice set-up in the week commencing 26th August (exact date and venue TBC), as this really helped speed up the actual set-up at the Minster.
If you cannot make the set-up and take-down dates, please try and find someone who can drop off and pick up for you – we may be able to assist if you can’t find anyone. Please note that we don’t have any storage space as such – we may be able to accommodate some smaller makes, but can’t store anything sizeable.
