Marin Nistor, 35, of Hardy Street, Hull, has been sentenced at Hull Crown Court for two years after pleading guilty to 37 separate offences involving theft and the fraudulent use of bank cards.
From the beginning of February to the end of March, Nistor stole purses from elderly shoppers bags in numerous supermarkets across Hull and East Riding, and then in some cases, would use their bank cards to make fraudulent transactions.
Detective Constable Neil White from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said: “Nistor is a prolific thief who has been specifically targeting lone women shoppers, the majority of which were the elderly and vulnerable, in supermarkets across Hull and East Riding, including Beverley, Hull, Pocklington and Bridlington.
“He has committed these crimes without a single thought to how it would make the victims feel to have their belongings stolen and discarded so carelessly.
“Not only has this had a financial impact on the many victims, but emotional too.
“Personal items and photos of loved ones have been thrown away thoughtlessly, and in some cases, they’ve even had to go to the trouble of replacing mobile phones and driving licenses, to then discover Nistor had been using their cards to fund his own lifestyle.
“I’d like to commend those involved in working tirelessly to gather sufficient evidence to get such a great result so he cannot cause any more emotional or financial harm.”
