14th November 2024“999 what’s your emergency?” – Humberside Police
Humberside Police Contact Officers and Dispatchers are the first point of contact for members of the public who are often at their most vulnerable and distressed at their point of picking up the phone and dialling 999.
They are the voice you hear when you call them.
They are the experts at obtaining information quickly and accurately.
They are the ones who get the response officers to the required location as quickly as possible.
All whilst simultaneously conducting checks, operating the radios, and keeping their eye on the next incoming incident.
It takes a certain kind of person with a certain set of skills to do what their call handlers and dispatchers do, but what is it really like for them to be the first to hear the horror stories from members of their own community, people from all walks of life, in all different situations, in the most traumatic, upsetting and often horrendous moments of their lives?
As part of their knife crime campaign, they’re speaking to a myriad of people, all of whom have been affected in some way by knife crime.
One such person who knows what it’s like to be the first person to find out someone has been murdered is Lucy Moss from our Force Control Room.
