4th September 2024Cycle crime is on the increase, make sure you have the right security in place!
Over the last few weeks, Humberside Police have seen an increase in bikes that are being stolen in the Humber region.
Thieves who target pedal cycles will either target cycles that have no security in place, or they have a low level of security.
Most cycle owners will use a cycle lock, but some of these locks can be cut through very easily, due to the low security rating of their lock. The higher the security rating, the more resistance a lock will provide if it is attacked.
Other things to consider is the location on where you lock your cycle. Can you use cycle pods or a cycle hub to increase the security of your cycle.
Below are some tips to help you keep your cycle safe.
- Always ensure you lock your bike when you leave it, use 2 locks if you can, and always lock it to something solid, ideally a cycle parking stand.
- Read up on the security standard of cycle locks – here, to see which security level is best for you.
- When it comes to cycle locks, cheaper locks do normally have lower levels of security, and thieves will look out for low security locks.
- Avoid leaving your cycle in an isolated area, leave your cycle where it can be seen.
- If there is a cycle hub near you, consider using it.
- If you have removable items such as lights, make sure they are removed if you leave your cycle.
- Lock your cycle, even when you are at home.
- Register your cycle for free on bike register, and security mark your bike, contact your local Community Team for this (Tel: 101)
- Consider cycle insurance, especially if you own an expensive cycle.
