Simple steps to reduce the risk of a burglary taking place

Most burglaries across the Humberside Force area are committed by opportunists. People who are looking to commit a burglary will travel around, whilst actively looking for an easy target.

There are 2 things that burglars do look out for because they provide easy and almost silent access as they open windows and unlocked doors.

Currently 1 in 3 burglaries within Humberside are committed where the burglar has gained entry through an unlocked door or an open window.

Whilst we are currently experiencing warmer weather, it is understandable that you may wish to leave your windows open during the day and at night, but please bear in mind, that is exactly what burglars are looking for.

If you could ensure your doors are locked, even when you are in the house, and your windows (especially ground floor) are closed or secured so they cannot be opened to allow someone to climb in when you aren’t in the room, you will reduce the risk of becoming a victim of burglary by a third.
